[Mer]Sultan Ahmet Camii is more commonly known as the Blue Mosque and is one of the mosques most visited by tourists world-wide. It was built between 1609 and 1616 under the orders of Sultan Ahmed I to a design by Mehmet Aga. The Blue Mosque is one of the few mosques to have six minarets and is also known for its structure of cascading multiple domes. It is said that the six minarets came about as a result of the builders mishearing the Sultan's instruction to build gold (altin) minarets for six (alti) minarets. At the time the design was considered scandalous because the only other mosque with six minarets was in Mecca.
Tourists and all non-Muslims should use the Northern entrance to the mosque which lies off the Hippodrome. Shoes must be removed, ladies must cover their heads and clothing must be modest. Once inside visitors will find the mosque is covered in blue tiles with intricate Iznik designs.
The mosque is open to worshipers at all times but to visitors only between 9.00 and 18.00. Access is not possible during the five daily prayer times. There is no charge but donations are always welcomed. An evening light show takes place in the summer months at 21.00.
